The second GEF Dniester Project Stering Committee meeting

On December 18, 2018, the Second Meeting of the Steering Committee of the Global Environment Facility (GEF) project ” Enabling transboundary co-operation and integrated water resources management in the Dniester River Basin” took place in Odesa, Ukraine. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss project results in 2018 and to approve the project work plan for the next year.
Key achivements of the project in 2018 include but not limited to: launching development of the Transboundary Diagnostic Analysis of the Dniester River basin (requirement of the EU Water Framework Directive), support to the first meeting of the bilateral Dniester River Basin Commission, development of a draft impact assessment of hydropower on ecosystems and water use in the Dniester basin, drafting recommendations to the operation rules of the the Dniester hydropower node, an inventory of tailing mines in the basin, and launching demonstration projects on a small river restoration. In 2019 the project will support monitoring and exchange of information in the basin, further support activities of the bilateral Dniester River Basin Commission and national basin committes / councils in both countries, will address climate change, implementation of the EU Floods Directive and public awarenness.
