Water balance of the Dniester river basin

Posted on 14.05.2020

A web-based system for calculating the water balance of the Dniester river basin was improved in 2018-2019 as a part of the GEF/UNDP/OSCE/UNECE project “Enabling transboundary co-operation and integrated water resources management in the Dniester River Basin”. The system is ready for use and available at http://vb.dniester-commission.com/. The interface supports four languages: Russian, Romanian, Ukrainian, and English.

This web-based system allows for calculation of the water balance of the whole Dniester river basin region, its sub-basins, and individual water management units. The system enables estimation of the quantity and degree of exploitation of available water resources under various conditions of water content of rivers. A more detailed description of the methodology for calculating the water balance is available at https://dniester-commission.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Methodology_final.pdf.

In March 2020, the GEF Dniester project handed over the updated system for the water balance calculation to the State Water Agency of the Republic of Moldova (“Apele Moldovei”) and the State Water Agency of Ukraine. These agencies will administer the system and enter new data.

The project has also developed infographics on the water balance and reserves in the Dniester basin in a low-water year to provide an example of calculation using the system.
